Cancer treatment options are discussed at interdisciplinary oncology conferences. Our transitive research department has established one of the largest tissue banks for lung cancer in Germany. Clinical research and biomedical sciences are used to rapidly implement new methods and standards in patient care, such as multimedia treatment concepts, using surgery in combination with radiotherapy and / or chemotherapy, or using chemotherapy in combination with radiation therapy alone.
Das Heidelberger Ionenstrahl-Therapiezentrum (HIT)
The institute is the first treatment center in Europe to use heavy ions for treatment. It is also the first center in the world to own Gantry, a mobile device that targets a beam of high-speed protons or carbon ions on a tumor, for example in the patient’s brain, at certain angles depending on the patient’s condition and with a very high accuracy of 5 and 0 mm to eliminate the cancer cells. The mobile device (gantry) weighs 670 tons and can rotate around the patient in 360 ° to straighten the beam, so that the beam is focused on the tumor and wiped from the background forward in the form of successive slides. The session takes about 20 minutes, and the patient needs about 20 sessions until the cancerous tumor is completely eliminated.
Before treating a patient with a beam of protons or carbon ions, the tumor is accurately visualized with an MRI scan. After pinpointing the exact shape of the tumor, the patient goes to the Heidelberg Center for treatment and elimination of the tumor. The Gantry System has a diameter of 13 meters, a length of 25 meters and a weight of 670 tons.
